Joshua Katcher of Discerning Brute has upped his eco-fashion status by creating not just a sustainable (and rugged cool) shoe line, but also a line of eco bowties & ties just perfect for the ethical hipster.
Brave GentleMan label ties come in three styles of each fabric – a tie, a classic butterfly bow tie, and a narrow bow tie. Designed by Joshua Katcher and made in New York City’s historic garment center by expert tailors – all the ties are made from organic cotton, hemp, recycled-hemp and recycled-PET. Even the interfacing is made with Japanese recycled–
PET made from plastic-bottle waste. You can buy the Brave GentleMan ties on GirlieGirl Army’s shop
and on their site! We adore a sexy woman in the Brave Gentleman bowtie (it’s so deliciously Diane Keaton,) so feel free to buy it as a gift for your boyfriend that you can borrow.

The exclusive collaboration between Novacas and Brave GentleMan features tailored, cool, and classic shoes and boots inspired by workers, masterminds and defenders. Tougher and eco-superior Italian faux-leather and faux-suede break in, breathe, and last longer than most vegan shoes and boots. Constructed fairly in Portugal, cruelty-free, and biodegradable uppers.
All of the BraveGentleMan items are made in very small runs, so it’s important to buy them when you can find them online or in-store.
Ecouterre.com raves about Brave GentleMan, “With its rugged, slicked-back aesthetic and stoic self-assuredness, the Novacas for Brave GentleMan shoe collection underscores one indubitable fact: It’s never been manlier to be vegan. A collaboration between blogger Joshua Katcher of The Discerning Brute and the Portugal-based vegan footwear label… The names of the shoes, ‘Worker,’ ‘Defender,’ and ‘Mastermind,’ call upon traditional roles that men take pride in, and that also inspire men to embrace sustainability and guardianship as very masculine, brave, and necessary work that needs to be done.
And of the ties: “Despite their speckled, tweedy texture, each neck- and bow tie is constructed from a blend of organic cotton and recycled hemp, then stiffened with interfacing derived from recycled plastic bottles—a manufacturing first for ties. All eight designs are crafted in New York City’s historic Garment District under fair-labor conditions, with options that include a 2.5-inch tie, a narrow bow tie, and a broad bow tie, depending on what style of “dappery” is most appropriate for the occasion.”
