Dazzling DHA’s

When our friend Mary Max (of fantastic eco grassroots group Kind Green Planet) suggested we take DHA’s to ward off winter blues, we thought “Yea, sure, we’ll buy another pricey supplement that will do nothing for us, and then sit in our fridge for all eternity. “  So we ordered Dr. Fuhrman’s (vegan) DHA’s anyway, and we swear to the Cupcake Gods, our moodiness is kaput.  We feel ten times more balanced, or as Mary says “immediately after I started taking it, I had a a natural ease in my head. It’s as simple and as good as this!”

What are DHA’s you may be thinking.  Good question!  According to the University of Maryland Medical Center;

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an omega-3 fatty acid. It is found in cold water fatty fish and in fish oil supplements, along with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). There are also vegetarian sources of DHA, which come from seaweed. DHA is essential for the proper functioning of our brains as adults, and for the development of our nervous system and visual abilities during the first 6 months of life. In addition, omega-3 fatty acids are part of a healthy diet that helps lower risk of heart disease. Our bodies naturally produce small amounts of DHA, but we must get the amounts we need from our diet or from supplements. Most people in the Western world do not get enough omega-3 fatty acids in their diet.

Just some of the fabulous things DHA’s are proven to acomplish: reducing menstraul cramps, relieving depression, reducing Attention Defecit Disorder symptoms, lowering the risk of Heart Disease, and reducing symptoms and inflammation associated with rheumatoid arthritis.

Our point?  Order them and take the recomended dosage every day.  This is crucial for you not wanting to murder your partner, boss, and loved ones — and so your bod stays gloriously healthy.  Bottoms up!

your blog raised an interesting question. i was wondering what the difference was between getting omega-3 from flax seed versus algae/fish, so i looked it up. many articles can be found:

    here’s one of them:

    I’m confused.
On the Kind Green Planet website it seems like they don’t like those drops.

It says: “Omega 3 fats in a separate dose (I take it a every other day) NuTru’s O-mega-Zen3 gelcaps, found at Pangea or at Vegan Essentials
Deva Vegan Omega-3 DHA softgels, found at Vegetarian Vitamin Dr. Fuhrman’s DHA Purity drops, found on his website.

(TMI: I can’t stand the drops; they make me gag, but others seem not to mind.)”

    Do the drops taste disgusting?

Makes total sense! I take fish oil supplements for dry eyes. One of my many stupid problems. :)
I recently ran out and have been a raving bitch since. I was wondering if that was the reason. I bet it is!

Try hemp oil. Much better has 3 - 6 and 9. Not just 3

I think the drops are really tasty. Me and the GirlieMan take ‘em as is, but if you don’t like the taste you can toss the drops in a drink or in your food to disguise it. Kim - I’d skip the fish oil, and take the DHA’s made from Algae. Much better for you!

Is this sort of like what St. Johns’ wart does?

  8. Chloé Jo:

No, not really. DHA’s are ESSENTIAL for your body and health (vegan or not), St. John’s Wort is more of an extra herb. I highly suggest reading “Becoming Vegan: The Complete Guide to Adopting a Healthy Plant-Based Diet” by Brenda Davis, RN if you’d like to learn more about which vitamins and nutrients your body needs and the best sources to get them. This book should be on everyone’s bookshelf (veg or not).

Help! I just got DHAs and the taste makes me want to vom. I tried mixing it in organic applesauce with some cinnamon and it was even worse. Any ideas?

  11. Chloe:

Kirby - mix it in your salad dressing. The oil disapears when mixed w a good vinagrette. That’s what I do.. remember you only need a very little bit per day (.50).
