Bone Strengthening Elixirs

Nutritional Consultant Gabrielle Brick advises us on bone strengthening (did you know there was such a thing?!);

To be strong on the outside we must be strong on the inside.   Seems pretty simple, right? What I’m about to share with you is one of the steps in  The Alchemy of Self which is a curriculum in optimal nutrition and the basis for conscious living.   Health begins with self… and our food is the most basic step.  As the great  Hippocrates once  said, “Let medicine be our food and food be our medicine.”

Can vegans have as strong a body as meat eaters? The answer is YES! and you will actually be stronger! In my last GirlieGirlArmy blog, I shared how Superfoods create a super body, now its time to get into the deepest layers of nutrition and talk about the mineralization of our BONES! Top herbs, foods, & supplements to keep your bones strong, your tendons tender, your joints juicy, your hair full, your nails long, and your skin firm!

Bone Strength Elixir

  • 1/4 Cup Goji berries
  • 1 Cup Sesame Seeds
  • 8 Cups Nettle, Horsetail, Oatstraw Tea
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • Agave – sweeten to taste

Part 1 : Make a pot of tea using these three herbs : Nettles, Horsetail, Oat Straw. These are delicate herbs, so have them soaking in the cool purified water while it comes to a slow high temperature. As soon as it begins to simmer turn the burner off and let sit until luke warm or cool. The reason you want to brew the herbs this was is so that they are free from being scalded by boiling water in which case we lose most of the minerals in the steam! So keep the pot covered! If your concerned about time, make this tea in the morning while getting ready for work and allow to cool for the day. When you get home you can move on to the next step.
Part 2 : Now that your tea is made take the tea, your sesame seeds, and goji berries and blend together on high. Next, strain.
Part 3 : Place back in blender and add vanilla & agave

You now have the most nutritious milk on the planet and it tastes GREAT!
Sesame is filled with minerals that support bone density. It is one of the best sources of calcium, along with manganese and zinc. Three of the biggest building blocks for strong bones!

These three herbs are high in nutrients and minerals. In addition, they are high in Silica . Silica is what helps with the assimilation of calcium keeping our bones dense, aids in  elasticity  of the skin, gives us joint support, and can help reduce swelling!

Horsetail is the most abundant source of silica and in high does can be used as sedative and anti-convulsant.

Nettles (sometimes called “stinging nettles”) is abundant in trace minerals and vitamins. It can be used as a treatment for inflammatory conditions, rheumatoid arthritis, prostate disease, and acid reflux!

Oatstraw is another great source of silica that is soothing for the skin. It also great at restoring the nervous system, strengthening ones constitution and may even help in the treatment of herpes (should that be an issue for you.)

As we have spoken about before, Goji berries are high in trace minerals and silica. They have one of the highest sources of Zinc and as we know, is one of the build blocks for strong bones! In addition Goji Berries are  polysaccharides  which is known to be a youthening agent! Ah, yes please! I leave you with an MSM Cocktail for extra pump in the plump of a juicy body!  Make this cocktail part of your morning routine, you will be amazed at the benefits you experience!


  • 1 rounded tsp MSM Powder
  • 6 oz of Purified Water
  • Lemon Juice of 1/2 a small lemon
  • pinch of Sea Salt

    Nothing increases bone DENSITY and strength like weight bearing exercises. Foregoing cabs and walking in this city – that’s made for walking – is one of the best ways to keep your (lower extremity) bones strong! Other weight bearing exercises that incorporate the upper extremities, such as pilates and yoga, will help build bone density in the arms.

    Oh and a side comment for clarity – walking as in the above comment would not be appropriate in the broken bone stage!

    Can help keep bones strong to help avoid fractures and will help healing at the appropriate stage of rehabilitation, under the supervision of a physical therapy or orthopedic doctor!

    If you can’t make the teas (great idea!), I highly recommend Jarrow Bone-Up. It’s calcium in an assimilable form, hydroxyapetite. It will help your breaks heal much faster. I worked in natural foods for 25 years and learned about it, and then broke my foot, and was so glad I knew about this product. I swear by it, so just had to share.

  7. Having come from an injury where I broke my femur in a car accident, I know the importance of bone density and rapid remineralization.

    I can say that Gabrielle has created a simple yet incredibly powerful recipe for all to indulge in to their hearts content, while knowing that they are creating stronger bones and building health.

    An interesting variation on this would be to use black sesame seeds (for those more hardcore :) ).

    BTW, I LOVE MSM and would enthusiastically promote everyone to get as much in their bodies as possible! I remember having taken it for 2 months straight about 20 grams a day (that’s a LOT) and having had to get my hair cut 4 times in those two months due to it growing so fast!

    I always appreciate Gabrielle’s insight and would take this information to the bank any day!
