The Healthy Voyager’s Global Kitchen makes all the world your vegan oyster. No cuisine isn’t up for plant-based grabs in this cookbook which is our savory, well-traveled dream cookbook come true.
Carolyn Scott-Hamilton’s new cookbook, The Healthy Voyager’s Global Kitchen, take you on a culinary journey around the world. One day you can indulge in decadent Italian fare and the next, experiment with a Russian dish. Over 150 recipes take cover the globe from America to Africa, China to Colombia and everything in between. So many ways to spice up any meal be it a regular weekday to a special occasion.
A cookbook that encompasses veganized world cuisine is an incredible way to recreate foods that you either grew up with, miss when dining out or traveling, or want to experience for the first time. It’d the perfect cookbook for someone just dipping their toes into the vegan waters as a transitional way to learn about all the great things vegans can eat. It’s also fun for the super healthy vegans as each recipes has alternatives to make it gluten free, soy free, low fat, diabetic friendly and more. Now everyone can enjoy awesome ethnic food without the worry!
Carnivores and herbies alike will love all of the dishes in the cookbook because Carolyn sticks to the traditional techniques of how the foods were originally made. Full of flavor and perfecting the texture so that you’re getting pretty close duplicate of the “real thing”. So much fun to serve at parties, especially international themed ones, to prove that vegan food ranks right up there with everything else. Actually, it’s way better!
Amazing recipes from the book include;
Alfajores – Dulce de Leche cookies from Argentina
Clams Casino from the USA
Spinach Souffle from France
Sukama Wiki from Africa
Classic Cobb Salad from the USA
Timbal de Qinoa and Pisto (Quinoa and Stewed Vegetable Towers) from Chile
Spanikopita from Greece
Waterzooi from The Netherlands
Carolyn includes lots of vegetables in every recipe to maximize nutrients and includes directions for making certain ingredients from scratch – like curry paste, gnocchi, pizza dough, marinara sauce, Worcestershire and fish sauce alternatives. Of course, when you don’t have the time you can always buy those things prepared, but it’s nice to know how to make healthier versions yourself.
At the beginning of the book, Carolyn gives an excellent list of spices and foods to get your kitchen set up. The more essential ones to start with are bolded so that you don’t have to feel overwhelmed, and those who already have a well-stocked kitchen can branch off to get the extras. Yes, there are ingredients here and there that you might not normally buy… but that’s the point! To venture out to new places and flavors! I didn’t come across any that I wouldn’t be able to find, are simple to sub or leave out certain things.
The list of shopping and kitchen tips is fantastic. One tip I loved was to make stocks and broths ahead of time and freeze them in ice cube trays. So simple, but so smart!
For people who are transitioning to a vegan diet, there are recipes that include meat substitutes like vegan chick’n, beef and sausages. It also shows you some great ways to use seitan, tofu and tempeh to ease yourself into a healthier plant-based diet. And for people who prefer sticking to whole foods, those things are really easy to swap for some beans, mushrooms or just leave out. There’s plenty of flavor and texture going on in every dish, so the recipes don’t rely on the vegan meat substitutes.
This is one of the most exciting vegan cookbooks we’ve ever gotten on our hands on – nothing is boring, everything is savory and exciting and tasty. We literally want to eat every recipe in this book.
