You may think a beach day with babe is as easy as sand, surf, and sea.. but its not that simple when rolling with a munchkin.
With the current heat levels being dangerous for little ones, always review your local weather to make sure it’s not dangerously hot for a baby. Anything over 80 degrees – even by the water – could be dangerous for a baby, and you may want to consider staying indoors or just heading out for a short jaunt.
“Babies don’t need a vacation, but I still see them at the beach… it pisses me off! I’ll go over to a little baby and say ‘What are you doing here? You haven’t worked a day in your life!'” Steven Wright
But if it’s a perfect beach day, and the sea calls – here are 10 items we couldn’t do without:
The perfect sunscreen is a must. We do love a spray sunscreen for our older kids, but they aren’t as recommended for babies for the following reasons:
Mommyhood101.com says; There seem to be three primary risks of using spray sunscreen: 1. The risk of spray sunscreen catching fire after it is applied. The FDA reports at least 5 incidents of bodies being burned following spray sunscreen use (from a grill, cigarette, etc). 2. The risk of chemical inhalation during application. There is concern that inhaling aerosol-borne chemical particulate matter can be dangerous for kids’ health. 3. The difficulty of seeing where you’ve applied sunscreen. It is hard to tell whether your kid is entirely covered when you use spray sunscreen, leading to risk of sunburn. Consumer Reports recommends not using spray sunblock until the FDA completes its full investigation into these issues.
In the meantime we tend to stick to ThinkBaby which is must-loved, nice and thick, and goes on relatively easily. If you’re wondering if your current baby sunscreen passes safety muster, plug it in over at EWG.org to see if it’s *truly* child-safe.
Keep babes little eyes out of the shade! The flap happy baby comes in organics, can be tied behind their ears (to keep it on), and protects their face all around.
So what if s/he pishes a little in the ocean.. a good reusable diaper will keep you all safe, and the earth happy!
Depending on your beach, mosquitos may be lingering. A gentle spritz or two of Badger spray on your hands (then run up and down babies swimsuit/ legs/ arms) should keep your area safe and your nugget free from bites.
A summer wrap is crucial to a great beach vacation! Walk on the beach? Need to nurse on the go? Walking to and from car to beach? A wrap will hold babe without shlepping a stroller. It doubles as something to lay on if you forget your towels! A summer wrap is different from a winter wrap in that it’s made in lighter fabrics with a thinner weave and will keep you and baby nice and cool while being hands-free. These glasses are perfect for little, sensitive eyes, and come in numerous great color combos.
Don’t hit the pool or beach without the modern version of our wings on your angel.
Carry snacks in these perfectly safe retractable snack cups that can fold in on itself once snacks are imbibed.
We cannot stress the importance of a tent with a baby enough! Having a good pop up tent will elongate and enhance your beach stay more than you can imagine. There’s no running home for nap when baby can be quietly put down in a closed area that’s not full of sand. There’s no being overwhelmed when you and babe can slip inside the tent with a portable fan and an icy drink! A closeable tent will give you and baby the breaks you need, and privacy for changing and breastfeeding – as needed.
When you throw a hooded towel on your little it makes life so much easier than having to wrap them up and towel them off with a traditional towel, especially if you are dying off multiple children at once, which somehow always seems to happen!
