Flax seeds are endlessly good for you. With an abundance of fish-free omega-3 fatty acids, anti-inflamatory properties, protection against heart disease, cancer and diabetes.. it’s kind of a no-brainer to toss some flax in everything you eat daily. We love to shake ’em in our lunch salads and morning shakes, even our evening stir-frys!
Here’s a quick, easy way to shake up your morning routine: try this refreshing and nutritiously delicious shake. You can use fresh or frozen berries, or substitute any of your favorite fruits in this recipe.
Ingredients:
8 oz. soymilk (or rice, almond, or hemp milk)
1 cup of strawberries
1 cup of raspberries
1 cup of blueberries
1 banana
2 tbs. freshly ground flax seed
1 Tbs. wheat germ
Directions:
- Mix ingredients together in a blender.
- Garnish with fresh fruit and enjoy immediately.
And even though Flax seeds are wonderfully helpful for women going through hot flashes, that doesn’t mean you gents should stop at the flax isle! Flax isn’t just for the ladies! Men consuming a small amount of flaxseed daily can lower their cholesterol in as few as three months, according to a new study from Iowa State University’s Nutrition and Wellness Research Center. That’s good news for those suffering from high cholesterol and looking for an alternative to prescription medications. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 17 percent of Americans suffer from high cholesterol, often contributing to heart disease and other significant health issues.
In the study, researchers monitored 90 people diagnosed with high cholesterol, but otherwise healthy. Participants were divided into three groups and assigned to take daily capsules containing zero, 150, or 300 milligrams of flaxseed lignans (chemical comounds) for three months. Researchers found that consuming at least 150 milligrams of flaxseed lignans per day can decrease cholesterol levels in men by approximately 10 percent. To read the full article, click here!
