Are you embarrassed to say you know BPA is bad, but you have no idea what it really is? In this short video, I’ll teach you what it is (so you can sound smart when explaining to your in-laws why you won’t be sleeping on an air mattress on your next visit) and simple ways to avoid it. BPA is Bisphenol A; which is a carbon based synthetic compound. Plainly speaking, it’s a chemical that makes plastic hard. And It’s responsible for that shower curtain smell or inside of your car, new car smell and it’s dangerous. BPA is an endocrine disruptor. Which means it messes with your hormones. It’s also been linked to pretty scary stuff like cancer, heart disease, and infertility in men. Did you know that one in six people are now struggling with infertility? And a lot studies have directly brought that back to BPA.

You want to try to live with as little BPA in your life as possible. But here is the problem. 90% of us have BPA in our bodies at all times. There is BPA in your vacuum cleaner. There is BPA in your shower curtain. There is BPA in your can food. There is BPA in things as innocuous as your kids bath toys. It’s really frightening. But they’re easy ways to make other choices. And that is just simply researching. There is a wonderful non-profit called Environmental Working Group, where you can directly go and type in whatever your product is. And it will tell you what dangerous chemical compounds your product may or may not contain.

For anything thing that you use in your house right now, I promise you, there is a clean, green alternative. You don’t need to have BPA laden bottles or sippy cups in your house. They’re alternatives everywhere with fabulous green kids and baby stores everywhere. For example, teething beads for baby that are BPA free, instead made with safer silicone.

There is also something great growing in popularity called bioplastics. Bioplastics are food grade plastics that are super safe. Made from plants, made from corn. They’re excess from the plant industry. These are things that are safe and good for you. You want to look for bioplastics. If you’re using bottled water you are living in the stone age. Get rid of it. Just get a simple vessel like this Eco Vessel or a filter as you sip Bobble. Drink your water out of this. Just make small steps, incremental steps. When you go to the coffee place in the morning and you order your coffee. Don’t have them put that toxic little plastic lid on it. Bring your own silicone lid. It’s a simple little tiny step that will make a big, big monumental difference in the long run.
