Why The Heck Is Everyone Talking About Amazon Prime Day, And What Is It?

Is Amazon Prime Day another day to be wasteful consumers or a genius money-saving hack to save money on anything you need?

Our vote? A little of both.

Here’s how it works: on July 11th, hundreds of thousands of deals will be offered to prime members, new deals starting as often as every five minutes, and special offers across everything included with Prime—from music and video to reading and voice shopping. Apparently these prices will be much lower than usual.

We are conflicted. This has a black friday frenzy vibe to it – at the same time 99% of us need to save money on the things we buy regularly, so if we can cheat the system and get 30% off something we use regularly, why the hell not. BestBlackFriday.com analyzed last year’s Prime Day prices and found that 77% were lower than on the Black Friday shopping holiday in the fall, with 13% of the prices equal on both days. Via QZ.com; Gadget review site the Wirecutter last year recommended only 64 Prime Day deals of the nearly 8,000 it scanned. You can paste Amazon product page urls into the CamelCamelCamel site to see how good the price is for a specific item compared to what Amazon has historically charged.

Final word: Get on it. Check the site on the 11th in the am, but don’t waste your money on things you don’t need for the sake of a lightning deal. DO stock up on the things that make regular appearances in your daily life, preferably from conscious, organic, and fair-trade companies, if available, or something you’ve been avoiding buying because you couldn’t afford it’s regular price.
