Project Green Dorm Makeover Contest!

Holla at the green teens in your life! Teens Turning Green (the nonprofit launched by dear friend to GGA Erin Schrode) just launched their “Project Green Dorm Makeover Contest” which challenges students to go back to school with an eco-conscious state of mind.  Teens Turning Green is collaborating with eBay Green and Whole Foods Market® to launch this Green Dorm Makeover Contest , which is a powerful call to action for students everywhere to head back-to-school in a thoughtful and sustainable way. Teens Turning Green is a student led global movement devoted to education and advocacy around environmentally sustainable and socially responsible choices for individuals, schools, and communities.

From August 1 through September 3, 2012, college students can enter the Project Green Dorm Makeover Contest! contest by curating the ultimate green dorm room with images and descriptions on Pinterest. All boards will be uploaded to the Teens Turning Green website to share. An esteemed panel of judges will then jury entries and select a first, second, and third place winner. The grand prize package includes everything that any student would need to get their green life started. Winners will be announced on September 7.

An innovative and extensive resource, the Project Green Dorm website offers a variety of eco products and practices to inspire the transition from conventional to conscious lifestyle choices.

“Projectgreendorm.com is incredibly comprehensive, addressing every aspect of dorm-life from coat hangers to organic pillows, so students can make healthier choices for themselves and the earth,” said Lucy Iglesias, Teens Turning Green Campaign member. “I’m excited to take on the challenge of designing my own eco-dorm room when I start at Brown in the fall, as a freshman.”

The website features 12 categories, each with a lookbook of top products that have been vetted for safety, sustainability and efficacy.

“Smart individual and collective choices can make a huge difference in protecting our planet for years to come,” said Erin Schrode, Teens Turning Green co-founder and New York University senior. ”When offered the choice, my generation tends to opt for that which lessens impact on human health and the environment. We want certified organic, 100 percent post-consumer recycled, non-GMO, fair trade, compostable, BPA-free, you name it! With Project Green Dorm, we seek to activate informed, young consumers to flex their green muscles.”

Buying less is buying wisely. Vintage, reused, shared, repurposed, or recycled items are rightfully becoming more prevalent. “The greenest product is often the one that already exists, ” partner eBay Green notes.
