Creepily, we are so detached from our “stuff” that we wouldn’t know who made anything we own, unless we made it ourselves.    Many things we never would have imagined caused pain and suffering are rampant with it, from our leggings to our morning tea.  As vegans, we know avoiding animal products can make a huge difference in global consciousness and direct action. But what about the people making our things?

This new “Slavery Footprint Calculator” let’s you know.  According to Refinery29′s Connie Wang; “Forced labor may be illegal in the United States, but the practice is alive and flourishing in many nations across the world (including our own), and has a hand in creating a lot of your shiny, new things, like phones, sweaters, boots, coffee, and lipstick. In fact, unless you’re Robinson Crusoe, most everything you own has been produced using slave labor in one form or another, whether its via the minerals mined for your eyeshadow or the cotton picked for your new jeans.”
