Who needs a canvas when you have a cuddly, organic teddy bear? When we were given one of these bears by Linda Trau for our GGA mascot baby, Panther,  we nearly started crying.  It’s so beautiful, but the story behind it is far more gorgeous.  They are made by Heartworks, an organization of women artisans in Africa – many genocide survivors and all supporting their families with this work.  These teddy bears are so beautiful, they are truly art.  Holding them up next to a traditional teddy bear from FAO Schwartz is like comparing a bottle of chemical-laden Sunkist to a juicy orange picked directly off the tree.  I’d want one of these even if I didn’t have a child.  They are exquisite and stunning.

Each teddy consists of 26 panels that are embroidered before being sewn together by the women artisans, so there’s a lot of love that’s gone into each bear.  They have EU-safe stuffing and there’s no parts that can fall off. The bears are decorated either with an African village scene, jungle animal scene, or flowers and butterflies and they are made with organic cotton.   Panther slowly points to each item on the bear, “Ball!!” (to the sunshine on the bears foot,) “lowwwwer!” (to the flower on the ear,) etc.  This bear is not just a friend, it’s a teaching tool, and the perfect gift for the chic and pregnant friend or couple who have everything.

They are available in black and white.  The Large bear is 18″ tall and costs $125.  The Small bear is 15″ tall and costs $115. Pricey, yes.  But worth it.  Handmade/ organic.

My friend Cindy who is about to give birth to her first child. I would love to give this to her for her baby so she can see something doesn’t have to cost tons of money or have a designer’s name on it to be beautiful. what makes something beautiful is that it was made ethically.

  2. melanie says:

i live 1,000 miles away from my family, and sometimes it can be pretty rough. my brother and sister-in-law are expecting a baby girl in september, and this would be the perfect gift to remind her that she has a loving auntie living very far away.

I would have one for myself because of the absolute beauty and craftmanship of each. There is nothing like hand-made folk art !!

  5. Susan says:

I’ve been watching my 6 month old nephew, Zachary, while my sister works, and one of these bears would be perfect for us to both admire & play with. He is at the age where he is starting to notice designs- on his blankets, toys, & even my throw pillows. I think he would love any of these bears.

  6. Cassy says:

My 19 year old daughter, Sydney would LOVE one of these beautiful bears. She has found out recently that she has Celiac. Not only has she done a great job changing her diet and lifestyle going gluten-free, she has gone vegan and raw and is a huge inspiration for other members our family to do the same. She started her own blog to share her journey and some recipes. She is so excited about being “green” and eating this way that it has become a life passion for her.

  7. anne says:

my daughter, who is 5 months old. we have been listening to strong women singers like betty lavette and billie holiday and charlotte gainsburg. this would be the perfect artistic and philanthropic companion. she needs to have strong women role models.

  8. Leigh says:

I am a youth librarian at the Brooklyn Public Library. I would love to add one of these beautiful bears to our puppet/stuffed animal collection that we use for storytelling programs. We are currently doing a theme of “One World, Many Stories” in our summer reading program and this would be a great addition to our programs that share African folktales.

  9. samantha says:

My sister, who teaches hearing impaired and mentally handicapped children in Phoenix, Arizona. She does so much for these kids, many of whom are children of immigrants (english is not their first language).

  10. Colleen Briedrick says:

My mother would love this bear. We went to Africa last year together after my dad died and it gave her a chance to see a wider world . . . one that is not fair to many people and that in order to survive you need to persevere and make life worth living. She was very inspired by the people of Africa and it gave her the courage to keep moving on in her life and to work on making her life better no matter what obstacles came in her way.

  11. v evan says:

These bears are especially fetching and unusually well made; beautiful, triumphant keepsakes for any age; a testament to the value of creativity in overcoming trauma and transforming personal adversity into an opportunity for collective connection and empowerment. They are endowed with a kind of energy and power that anyone is lucky to have in their midst.
My 3 girls would love one!

My 95 year old aunt collects teddy bears-this would be an excellent gift for her!

  13. vanessa says:

My beautiful vegan friend Rachel is in her first pregnancy right now. She would be the perfect person to gift this bear to. She is a holistic living expert and nutritionist in Los Angeles. She is beautiful in every way and educates people daily about living a beautiful, healthy, vegan life. She won’t allow anything in her nursery unless its organic and chemical free. This bear is perfect for her and her soon to be baby!

  14. kimberly says:

I would LOVE a bear!! I am 11 weeks pregnant with my first child and this new chapter in my life has made me more conscious and aware of what I put into my body. I have always had a clean diet, but because I am growing a new life inside me, I decided to turn vegan and use this special time in my life to volunteer at animal rescues and spend time with the dogs that ‘nobody wants.’ It has given me a newfound passion for life! :)

  15. Caitlin says:

My cousin, her husband and their sweet one-year-old daughter deserve this bear. After my cousin gave birth to twins last year, their son was found to have a heart defect, and after only three months, so much of that being in the ER, he was laid to rest. I know every day they think about their boy, and this family gives their year-old daughter all the love in the world. I think these bears are as beautiful and strong as their family ties, and I would love it if they had this bear as a blessing and a reminder of the strength of their love.

  16. Naomi says:

My dear friend Kathleen is expecting her second child and this would be an amazing baby gift… she sews and does a lot of crafts so it’s hard to find things that are truly special for her. She would really like the meaning behind the bears, too.

  17. Kristen says:

I would love to have one of these bears for myself. Such beautiful craftsmanship!! And the meaning behind the bears touch my heart. Also, I love the authenticity and individuality of each bear and what they all represent to this world. :)

  18. Annette says:

My best friends mom is one of the most caring and wonderful people I know. She works as a caregiver for the elderly and had recently also taken care of her mom before she passed away. She has the most giving and kind heart ever, and she’s always giving to her children and grandchildren. I’m sure she would love this little bear and hopefully, it will remind her that she is a beautiful and amazing humanitarian. Thank you :)

  19. Nathalie says:

I would love to give one of these bears to my mother, who taught me that kindness and responsibility are the most important qualities to embody, and whom I miss every day since we live across the country from each other.

  20. Adina says:

My friend is pregnant with her first child, and she has been having a very rough pregnancy thus far, but is still positive and excited to bring her baby boy into the world. This would be the absolute most amazing gift for the first-time mom!

  21. Emma says:

Begun, the great internet edcuaiton has.

  22. Jess says:

My sister Kailee is a young activist who gets bullied and made fun of at school because of what she stands for and who she loves. She often comes home crying because of what they call her, and it would make her feel so special and important to know that something so beautiful was made and a difference was made in the world.

  23. nadia jaber says:

To my wonderful daughter, who serves as an inspiration to live my life better!

  24. Angela says:

My sister and her husband have been trying for a baby for about 2 years now. He’s been dragging his feet about fertility testing, but if it turns out something isn’t right they are more than willing to adopt. So while there is no niece or nephew on the way quite yet, I would love to have this at the ready once there is!
My sister has traveled quite a bit – to Greece, throughout Europe, Tanzania to climb Kilimanjaro, and most recently a trip to North India with me.
She planned the whole trip for us after a hellish year in which I was diagnosed with a rare, fatal lung disease and my mother’s battle with depression and Parkinson’s reached a critical point, placing much stress on the both of us.
I can’t say enough wonderful things about her – she is a wonderful person with a big heart, even mentoring a girl for the last 5 years or so on top of our family struggles, a demanding job AND graduate school.
I can’t think of anything more perfect to thank her!

  25. Shar Gorgiiss says:

My high-school friend Tricia just had a baby girl. She always admires my choice to be healthier and vegan to the extent that she’ll buy dinner at a place like Pure Food & Wine for the both of us. Her boyfriend isn’t vegan, so I guess that makes it harder for her to do it herself. Maybe that’s not the best reason to win, but anything I can do to help her make better choices would be fantastic. And since we’ve been friends for so many years, this wouldn’t only be a babt gift but also a celebration of our friendship. Thanks, xo, sg

  26. Jessica says:

This beautiful bear would be a gift for my mother who has always supported women’s rights and has always supported me, including my decision to be vegan.

  27. Wendy Branson says:

My BFF Amy has collected unique bears for years. This awesome bear would be the next treasure added to her group. Thanx!
