Giving Good Natural Face And Hair

TILTH

Tilth has been a standout at GGA HQ this season. This line is entirely vegan, cruelty-free, eco-friendly, and made in America with some of the most luxe all-natural ingredients possible. We are so impressed by the products and morals behind this company. The collection contains safe, effective, skin care technology. Each product in the luxury skin care range is formulated with supreme quality natural, botanical and cosmeceuticals ingredients. They work in concert with “Mother Nature’s abundant and abiding genius” and claim first and foremost that their love of animals and the earth drive the ethics behind the line. The line is fantastic, though the stand out for us is the cleanser.

NERIUM

During advanced research on the uses of the Nerium oleander plant, an accidental discovery was made: the unique properties of Nerium oleander provided remarkable age-defying results when applied to the skin. This finding led to the formation of the NeriumAD skincare line. Nerium scientists developed a breakthrough process, NBio-PL2, to derive an extract from the Nerium oleander plant in a way that preserves its unique and beneficial properties. This patented extraction process yields the NAE-8 extract, with powerful antioxidant properties, used to formulate the first-of-its-kind, age-defying Nerium product line. This anti-aging line works exceedingly well. Stand out for us – the nighttime moisturizer.

COOLA

Coola is a line of certified organic sun protection (!) just in time for vacation! With the most pure, eco-conscious products possible, this line is organic, sustainable and locally sourced, much like the foods we prefer to eat. Green, yet still luxurious, these products will protect and nourish your skin with vitamins, natural-protectors and age-defying antioxidants. In addition to being solar powered™, they also incorporate farm to face™ which describes their sourcing policy for local ingredients and vendors. In 2012 Coola introduced plant protection™ after revolutionizing the use of plant stem cells and plant phyto-protectors to boost sun protection naturally. We believe and hope this company continues to pave the way in the suncare industry, wouldn’t it be great to pop in to CVS last minute and grab actually organic sunscreen?! And because the company produces in limited quantity batches in sunny and cool San Diego, they’re able to reformulate often, taking advantage of new developments in sun science. Stand out for us? The easy (for Mama and baby!) spray sunscreen options which won’t waft you in a stink of chemicals!

MAYRON’S GOODS

Melanie Mayron won an Emmy for her role on the groundbreaking ABC drama “thirtysomething.” 12 years ago, she and her pharmaceutical pro father “set out to develop a diaper cream. I wanted something natural. Nobody was talking natural back then.” With noo DEA, no Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, and 99.8% natural – these cruelty-free products smell really lovely and feature some innovative applicators, like the moisturizing chap stick in a deodorant shape used for anywhere you are dry (those do, however contain beeswax, so that product is out for vegans.) The stand out for us? The baby wash which smells so lovely. It doesn’t lather, so if you are someone who needs to see bubbles, it’s not for you. The line also has some lovely adult offerings, and a plethora of cute baby gifts for the new green Momma in your life.

SURYA

This line just keeps improving their offerings of Amazonian Organic ingredients. We are particularly partial to their new face and body scrubs made with 100% natural exfoliants from Coconut bark and organic Buriti, which remove dead cells and impurities. Amazonian White Clay enhances the exfoliation power, and a high concentration of organic Aloe Vera juice provides intense hydration. It leaves skin silky, smooth, soft and hydrated. No ethyl alcohol, sulfates or silicone. But best of all, it smells like a sexy day on the beach. The smell will make you feel happy and summery, even if you are depressed and snowed in. This line certified vegan, organic, and eco. It doesn’t get much better than that. With NO sulfates, NO parabens, NO BHT, NO EDTA, NO synthetic fragrance, NO mineral oil, NO GMOs, NO phthalates, NO alcohol, NO silicon — we say YES.

Meaning, maybe you don’t have $100 for a moisturizer, but you totes want a healthy face! This line keeps adding fantastic new products to their line up. Our current favorite? Their hand soaps made with pure essential oil blends which cleanse and moisturize and leave your paws smelling gorge. And the prices cannot be beat with under $5 for a massive hand soap pump!

We are just mad for their newest release – their Geranium essential oil line which yields a balancing aromatherapy benefit that helps modify emotions that are in a state of flux. Who couldn’t use this? The main reason we love it — it just smells so darn sweet.

  • Roasted Zucchini + Soba Noodle Summer Rolls {Vegan + Gluten-Free} Roasted Zucchini + Soba Noodle Summer Rolls {Vegan + Gluten-Free} Winter be damned, we want summer rolls - and we want them now. These rolls take a bit of doing, but making them is a process that I find wholly enjoyable when I have the time for a leisurely kitchen project, and the resulting rolls feel so pretty and special. Soba noodles are cooked and rinsed under cool water, then tossed with a few drops of oil to prevent stickage. Zucchini are roasted and cooled. Carrots are ribboned and tossed with rice vinegar, scallions are slivered, herbs are stemmed and washed. Rice paper wrappers are softened in warm water and layered with ingredients. Rolls are rolled. Sauce is made. Rolls are eaten! (Best part.) Serve these at a cocktail party and people will look at you as though you are magical. This recipe isn't set in stone, so feel free to use whatever vegetables you happen to have on hand. Snap peas, cucumber, bell pepper, and radish would all be good. By Alanna Taylor-Tobin, originally published on The Bojon Gourmet. Roasted Zucchini + Soba Noodle Summer Rolls {Vegan + Gluten-Free} Select smaller zucchini for these rolls, which will have maximum flavor and minimum water content. Feel free to play fast and loose with the filling, adding cucumber, radish, snap peas, thai basil, shiso, mushrooms, or sweet peppers as you see fit. I used 100% buckwheat soba for their gluten-free-ness, but the hybrid guys made with wheat tend to hold together better when cooked. I used these organic brown rice spring roll wrappers from Happy Pho which contain green tea, but any wrappers will work beautifully. I found that 25 seconds submerged in warm water prior to rolling softened these just the right amount (yes, I timed it). White rice wrappers will probably soften up more quickly, however, so go with the package instructions. These rolls are best eaten shortly after rolling when the wrapper is moist and pliant, but they'll keep airtight and covered in damp paper towels in the fridge for a day or two. You can spritz the rolls with water if they become dry or tough. As for the sauce, be sure to stir your jars of almond butter and tahini prior to measuring as the oil likes to separate and float to the top. You can substitute both with peanut butter if you like. Makes about 12 rolls, serving 12 as an appetizer For the zucchini: 6 medium zucchini (about 1 3/4 pounds / 800 grams) 2-3 tablespoons light olive oil (or other cooking oil) 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt For the noodles: 7-8 ounces soba noodles (100% buckwheat if you want the rolls to be gluten-free) 1 tablespoon light olive oil For finishing the rolls: 4 medium carrots, scrubbed 2 tablespoons rice vinegar leaves from 1/2 a bunch of mint leaves from 1/2 a bunch of cilantro (soft stems ok) 4 scallions 8 ounces seasoned, firm or extra-firm tofu (preferably smoked or braised) 12-16 brown rice (or other) spring roll wrappers (plus extras to allow for breakage) For the dipping sauce: 1/4 cup smooth almond butter 1/4 cup tahini 1/4 cup tamari (or soy sauce) 1/4 cup toasted sesame oil 1" knob of fresh ginger, finely grated on a microplane to equal 2 teaspoons 4 teaspoons maple syrup 1/4 cup rice vinegar, or more to taste Cook the zucchini: Position a rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 425ºF. Halve the zucchini crosswise, then cut them into 1/2" thick spears. Place them on a rimmed baking sheet, drizzle with the olive oil, and sprinkle with the salt. Toss to coat, then spread them into a single layer. Roast the zucchini until golden on the first side, about 10 minutes, then rotate and cook on a second side until golden and tender but still firm, 5-10 more minutes. Remove from the oven and let cool. Cook the noodles: Bring a large saucepan filled with lightly salted water to a boil. Add the noodles and cook, stirring, until tender (see the package for cooking time). Drain and rinse well with cool water, then toss with the 1 tablespoon olive oil. Set aside. Prepare the fillings: Peel the scrubbed carrots into ribbons with a vegetable peeler. Place in a medium bowl and toss with the rice vinegar. Set aside. Place the cilantro and mint leaves in a bowl. Rinse the scallions well, trim, cut them crosswise into 4" lengths, then into long slivers and place in a small bowl. Cut the tofu into pieces roughly the size of the zucchini spears and place in a bowl. Assemble the rolls: Fill a very large bowl with warm water. Have the wrappers and ingredients nearby, as well as a large plate or cutting board to shape the rolls on, and a platter on which to place the finished rolls. Submerge a wrapper in the warm water and hold it there until it has softened a bit but still holds its shape. (My brown rice wrappers liked exactly 25 seconds, but white rice or tapioca wrappers usually take only 5 seconds or so. It may take a few tries to get the timing right.) Lay the wrapper on the plate or cutting board. On the lower third of the wrapper, place a small handful of noodles, 2-3 pieces of tofu, 2-3 zucchini spears, a few carrot ribbons, several slivered scallions and a generous handful of herbs. Grasp the bottom of the wrapper with your thumbs and forefingers and cup the filling with your other six fingers to fold the bottom of the wrapper up and over the filling. (It may take a bit of practice to get the right amount of pressure so that the wrapper doesn't tear but the filling is pressed tightly enough to hold together when the rolls are cut.) Fold the sides of the wrapper in toward the center, then roll the roll the rest of the way. (For pretty rolls, you can place a few herb leaves on the wrapper before making the final fold.) Assemble the remaining rolls, covering the finished ones with damp paper towels or a clean, damp kitchen towel to keep them from drying out. (Or store them airtight covered in damp paper towels and chill for 1-2 days.) Make the dipping sauce: In a large bowl, whisk together the almond butter, tahini, tamari, sesame oil, ginger, maple syrup, and vinegar until smooth. Taste, adding more vinegar or ginger if you want the flavors a little sharper, more almond butter if you want it thicker, or a few drops of water if the mixture is too thick. The dressing will keep for up to a week in the fridge. To serve the rolls, cut them in half on the diagonal and arrange them on a platter with the dipping sauce. Eat! • New All Natural Beauty Products We Are LovingNew All Natural Beauty Products We Are LovingYou know we always have our lip-glossed snouts to the ground sniffing out the best of all-natural beauty products for you darlings;  keeping in mind a nice range of bank accounts and skin types and tones. Here are some newbies that are in high rotation in our routine that deliver the gorgeous goods; LINE WE LOVE: Josie Maran Cosmetics WHY: When we first heard about Josie Maran's beauty line we groaned.. another supermodel pretending to be green?  Blech.  But then we actually gave it (and her) a chance.  This girl is authentically green, she comes from an eco-conscious family and she lives it like she preaches it - from backyard homebirths to a passionate commitment to holistic living. Equipped with a supermodel’s secret tricks and a nature-loving “eco-preneur’s” vision, Josie created her own signature line of socially and environmentally responsible, Argan Oil-based skincare and cosmetics that work and feel, smell, and look luxe on your bathroom counter. This line definitely lives up to its motto: “Luxury With A Conscience.” Partnering with earth-loving, women-empowering organizations, using the best ingredients, packaging products in recyclable and biodegradable containers, Josie Maran Cosmetics embraces eco-friendly practices that embody Josie’s love—for people and for the planet. OUR FAVORITES:  The vegan products in the line are marked with vegan, so it's easy to figure out which products are safe for you.  Non are animal tested (obviously) and all are paraban free.  We are adoring the basic Argan Oil for body, hair, and face moisturization.  The smell isn't amazing (it's neutral) but the results are.  One of our non-vegan beauty reviewers says their mascara (unfortunately it does contain beeswax which some vegans will still use, others won't) is the best all-natural mascara she has tried.  The best of the line in terms of vegan make up may be the Lip and Cheek Stain which gives lips and cheeks the sexiest and most natural flush. +++ LINE WE LOVE: MuLondon WHY: This line is handmade in London and totally committed to all natural and cruelty free beauty.  The entire line is actually certified vegan (score!) and cruelty-free.  We are mad for the pungent (in a good way) smells of these moisturizing lotions and cleansers (currently their only offerings.) They contain no mineral oils, parabens, silicones, emulsifiers or other man-made chemicals. OUR FAVORITES: The Organic Rose Moisturizer.  It smells like pure heaven (the essential oil of rose they use is certified organic and steam distilled - it is not solvent-extracted, as is the case with the cheaper rose absolute, and thirty roses must be used to make a single drop of Rose Otto!) and really works.  The only downside is you do need to emulsify it in your hand to break it up before applying, so it's not immediately creamy... but once it goes on it's super rich and luxe. +++ LINE WE LOVE: Zinn Beauty WHY:  For centuries, Moroccan women have used Argan Oil to preserve and enhance their skin, hair, and nails. The rarest of all oils, Argan Oil is harvested from the Argan tree which grows exclusively in the South-Western region of the Country, and can only be collected through the intricate process of cracking each individual nut, and extracting the kernel, which is then pressed and ground, to yield the highest nutritive quality of oils. Rich in antioxidants, essential fatty acids, vitamins and plant sterols, Berber women began cultivating Argan Oil pre-modern times, for its healing properties, employing it for a variety of uses from cooking, to topical treatment of skin diseases, to cosmetic uses in the protection of the hair and skin against the harsh, dry, climate of the Moroccan desert. In the 1500’s, the legend of the miraculous Argan Tree and it’s precious oil began to reach Europe, with demand for the exotic oil reaching its historical height in 1867 when it debuted at the International Fair in Paris.  That said, much like Josie Maran Cosmetics, here's another line that's mainly focused on Argan Oil.  The packaging is lovely (for the hair oils it's golden caps and thick glass tasseled bottles - the other products packaging is more basic) and the price is right.   Plus the line is organic and vegan.  You can't go wrong.  We randomly came across this line at Duane Reade of all places (!) but it also sells at Ricky's and online. OUR FAVORITES: The Velvet Facial Cleansing Milk is a rich, organic facial cleaner that feels great on the skin and makes you feel super smooth after. It removes make up incredibly well and has a nice scent. ++ LINE WE LOVE: Sibu Beauty WHY: The hype on these products is that they are made from the Himalayan sea buckthorn berry. Known as the “beauty berry” across Europe and Asia, sea buckthorn contains over 190 bioactive compounds that restore, revitalize, and protect youthful beauty.  These hardy berries help nourish skin, hair, and nails with powerful antioxidants and essential fatty acids, including Omega 7 – a key building block to healthy skin, hair, and nails, and also aids digestion and may help you maintain a healthier weight. Sibu Beauty features luxurious natural skin cleansers, moisturizes, and other topical treatments as well as dietary supplements.  The line is totally cruelty-free and organic. OUR FAVORITES: The Sea Buckthorn Hydrating Serum is like an alarm clock to the face, it feels cooling and tightening going on. This light, non-oily serum will flood your skin with moisture an help deeply hydrate your face ad next to eliminate the tight, dry feeling caused by dehydration.  It's a nice alternative to thick moisturizers when you want to use something but don't want that heavy feeling on your face. +++ LINE WE LOVE: Everyday Minerals WHY: Everyday Minerals is an organic, vegan and eco-friendly line of make up that  specializes in an innovative collection of products with a spectrum of over 150 vibrant colors and shades that flatter virtually every skin tone.  It's rare to find an entirely vegan make up line that's green and works.  This one delivers... and for very reasonable prices (eyeshadows start at $4.50.)  We are also mad for their brush line of synthetics that get make up on smoothly every time. Concealers, lipsticks, even adorable make up bags are available on their site.  The downside? It seems the founder Carina is a fan of Butler Longhorn cow breeding which to us seems highly incongruent with vegan ethics.  On that bummer note, we recently found out another one of our other favorite organic lines, Tata Harper, grow their herbs and ingredients on their own working farm where animals are used and slaughtered for food.  This is more than enough to turn off a vegan consumer, and we will certainly now be taking our beauty business elsewhere.  Everyday Minerals, however, can be found on PETA’s list of approved companies. OUR FAVORITES:  The brushes work exceptionally well and are wonderfully priced.  There is a wide range of sizes and angled options for us beauty addicts who love a good set of tools.  All the bases are very natural looking and cover beautifully, the special part about these foundations being that they are powdered and come in (it seems) a billion skin tone options. +++ Front image via […]
