Red Carpet Green Dress at the Oscars

Published on March 1, 2012 by   ·   4 Comments

Actress Missi Pyle, who plays the vain starlet in this year’s best-picture Oscar winner, The Artist, entered the 84th Academy Awards ceremony Sunday wearing a stunning and sustainable gown designed by Valentina Delfino, chosen winner of another glittering contest – Red Carpet Green Dress.

Delfino – born in Venezuela and based in Miami – was among hundreds of designers from around the world who submitted a sustainable dress design for the competition, now in its third year.

The Red Carpet Green Dress contest, says founder Suzy Cameron Amis, gives aspiring or established designers a chance “to make a beautiful and sustainable gown that will be seen on the single most anticipated red carpet” on Oscar night.

Pyle’s winning gown contains silk peace chiffon, lined with recycled polyester and a sustainable zipper located on the left side seam. The chiffon is dyed with a natural mineral dye, which is both environmentally friendly and OSHA approved.

  1. A nony mouse says:

    Peace silk is an oxymoron.

  2. Rubyathena says:

Yes what the heck is peace silk? Recycled from old silk?

  3. Though peace silk isn’t officially vegan, many vegans will wear it.

Here’s a description from a peace silk site; “The cocoons are small and the silk is very light in colour, almost as white as bombyx (cultivated) silk.  Eri silkworms eat Castor bean plant leaves and the cocoons are gathered after the moth emerges, which makes this Eri silk “Peace” silk.  The moths are allowed to emerge, mate, lay eggs and die happy.  Today most Eri silk is cultivated in rural development projects sponsored by the India government.  The fibre is processed, spun and the fabric woven in small mills in village India.”

We chose to run this story because although this gown isn’t what many ethical vegans would consider totally vegan, it’s Eco newsworthy that a starlet chose a sustainable gown for such a major event. It does send a message to other designers and actors that sustainable can be done beautifully.

    Hopefully next time, totally vegan!!

That gown is gorgeous!! And she looks amazing in it:-) Hopefully more starlets will take her lead and choose more sustainable and vegan-friendly options instead of say, Chanel & Armani. Wearing anything even remotely eco in red carpet circles is so rare that every high-heeled step to the right direction is huge.
