Biodegradable Bikinis & Upcycled Tankinis PLUS: Win Your Favorite EcoSwim suit!

Published on August 15, 2011 by   ·   21 Comments Pin It

And the award for GirlieGirl Army’s official choice for best bathing suit line of 2011 goes to EcoSwim. Reduce your carbon footprint in the sand with our favorite new brand of swimwear.  These suits, unlike all of the other green lines we’ve tried, isn’t flimsy, unsupportive, and easy to pill.  These are substantial, hold you in amazingly (like underwater spanx!) have chic style, and just happen to be green.  There is basically no competition when it comes to a better eco-swim suit, and we have tried them all!   The base fabric (Repreve Nylon) the linings, the trim components (grommets, zippers, snaps, etc.), and even the packaging and hangtags are all made from recycled materials. For the bra cups, the company uses Eco Cell foam, a biodegradable substance derived from plant oils and recycled materials. In the printing and dyeing process, the company uses Oeko-Tex-approved standards which mandate that water usage be minimized and only lower impact dyes be used. These standards also limit the concentrations of many toxic chemicals used in textile manufacture, from heavy metals to formaldehyde. The company uses both consumer and industrial waste to create their fabrics. Repreve actually reuses its own industrial waste in their production process to limit their use of natural resources. The company is unique in that their fabric is created from 100% recycled materials, meaning no raw materials are introduced in their production process. Plastic bottles and nylon are the main inputs in their fabric, but you’d never know that this high-quality material was created from discarded materials. That’s why the term is upcycling; in the process the materials are actually reformed into a more valuable substance.

Sold on the ethics?  Now for the style – sexy but conservative enough for the more coy amongst us.  Green done elegantly.  Some may say, suits you’d wear to meet your future in-laws.

There are only a few weeks left of summer, and as any recessionista knows – it’s time buy our swimsuits on sale and stock up now for winter vaca! Find a EcoSwim retailer near you here.  They will be available to purchase from online retailers in September, and we’ll keep you updated on that.

WIN IT! Enter for a chance to win your favorite EcoSwim Suit! (contest is now closed)

There is nothing I love more than looking good and feeling good at the same time. Suits like these certainly promote both. The looks are to die for, and you will know that are helping take care of mother earth at the same time. I would love to try one out!

  2. Amanda Hopkins says:

I thought my old bikinis were biodegradable, but it turns out that’s just what any bathing suit looks like when you don’t have the $$$ to buy a new one for four years – stretched out, holy and basically disgusting. The real thing looks much better!

I could really use a one piece to cover up my newly acquired surgery scars, too….HINT HINT.

P.S. thanks for making the dreary life of an americorps volunteer a little more fabulous. i love you girliegirls!

  3. Jamie C. says:

I have spent the entire summer searching unsuccessfully for a suit that looked good and was eco friendly. Thank you so much for the super informative review. I learned a lot. I am very impressed that they are made from 100% recycled materials. Who knew upcycled could look so good?

Since moving to a more vegetarian/vegan diet my Tankinis have all gotten too big and I am trying to avoid a “wardrobe malfunction” HELP PLEASE!!!

  5. Amber Shea says:

I’ve been trying unsuccessfully to lose weight for a good year or two now, and becoming increasingly uncomfortable in my own skin – and swimsuits – in the process. I’d really love to have a suit, especially an eco-friendly one, that fits my curves, so I can go swimming at least a few times before this summer ends. Pick me!

  6. Sheila Chaffins says:

I have never worn a green bathing suit. I am new to the organic, green thing but I am giving it my all. Healthy feels wonderful! Please pick me!

This labor day I’m volunteering at a medicinal herb sanctuary in Ohio, way different than my NYC home! Let me show the locals that we can bring high fashion riverside and keep it green in a cute new suit!

I love the third suit. Very flirty and figure flattering.

  11. Shannon says:

How awesome! I was just thinking I would have to look for a new suit at the end of summer … I’ve barely seen any that are considered eco-friendly, let alone fashionable! This is a score!

  12. celyn says:

Thank you to EcoSwim for giving away a suit and GGA for hosting the giveaway. I’m a returning graduate student and as such I don’t have much money to spend. I spend a lot of time sourcing well-made, beautiful, eco-friendly clothing so that I am investing in products that will serve me well for a long time, and also serve the earth. These suits fit the bill for all of my criteria. I love upcycling, and I love the designs! The first and the third are especially pretty.

  13. carrie obrien says:

  14. I’ve been eying these eco-friendly suits, but didn’t know where I could get my hands on one. Love them all. I always said I’d never rock a swimsuit online. Maybe I’ll make an exception, if I won. I mean, I’d have to post about it on my site :-)

I am a vegetarian, but people don’t think so because I’m not skinny or fit. I think I eat too much pasta, bread, rice, you know, all the carbohydrates. If I win EcoSwim suits, I promise I will go on diet! ;) BTW, I “LIKE” GirlieGirl Army Facebook Page AND EcoSwim on FB too.
