Gold Is Back

Published on September 12, 2008 by   ·   3 Comments

Rose gold accessories are what everyone was yapping about at Fashion Week in NYC the past few days. Get with the trend (especially gorgeous on ethnic skin tones!) with items like this delicious ring (below) from St Kilda Jewelry. What is so eco about buying stuff, you may be asking? Good question! Well, every time you buy well made, artisan crafted pieces that will be passed down from generation to generation – you are taking a stand against buying junky, throw-a-way shmata jewelry that will end up stuffing up our landfills and using up our natural resources to be produced. All of the pieces here are made in small quantities by hand, or custom-order only, so you are not only supporting independent jewelry designers, you are also being a green goddess. Who knew you were doing an eco-mitzvah just by buying yourself something gorgeous. You can also make sure your local designers have signed the “no dirty gold” pledge, and source their gold from responsibly. Want to know what’s so eco-naughty about standard gold mining practices? Learn all about it here.

Rose gold is not quite as hard as yellow gold, and much warmer than jarring silver or platinum. We find it be the sexiest of all the metals. It invokes images of belly dancers and long, summery nights. Or at least a good day of drooling over the jewelry counters at Barney’s.

Wiki tells us;

Rose gold is a gold and copper alloy widely used for specialized jewelry due to its reddish color. It is also known as pink gold and red gold. Because it was popular in Russia at the beginning of the nineteenth century it is also known as Russian gold, although this term has become somewhat rare. Since it is an alloy, there is no such thing as “pure rose gold”; pure gold is yellow and pure copper is reddish. Although the names are often used interchangeably, the difference between red, rose, and pink gold is the copper content: The higher the copper content, the stronger the red coloration.

Get all posh with French designer Frederique Dessemond‘s hip lace Rose Gold custom monogram pendants from her studio in Brooklyn.

Cutest of all are the pinky promise rings from Knot2much2ask, the precious jewelry line by Helen Cavallo and actress Joely Fisher. Pinky promises! Remember those? Cross your heart and hope to die? It was the ultimate show of commitment and a way to seal the deal with your partner in ice cream, or crime. Available in 14k rose gold (pink gold for your pink-y – get it!?).

Been wearing silver since your Bat Mitzvah and need to ease in slowly? That’s cool. Try these no-fail Jamie Wolf “Bohemian” Hoop Earrings in 18k rose gold. Isn’t it funny how so many of these jewelry designers name their rose gold pieces “Bohemian”? Odd co-incidence or does rose gold have the scarlett “B” stamped on it’s metal nose?

And for minute, let’s dare to dream of a time where an $11,000 bracelet would be acceptable for us. Cuz if it was, we’d snatch up this magnificent vintage Russian Bird Bangle by Charlotte Bjorlin D’Elia.

Of course, greenest of all is to buy vintage. And there are plenty of rose gold finds out there if you look hard enough. Like in your Grandma’s jewelry box.

  2. I am still laughing from the title of this entry. hahah!

  3. [...] mining practices are a bit sketchy (read all about that here.) Skip the real thing and opt for recycled chains like this bracelet from Dirty Librarian Chains. [...]
