Liam Neeson Backs Horse Carriage Industry

ARAN, Ireland’s national animal rights group, has taken aim at Hollywood heavyweight Liam Neeson this week in relation to statements he made that shot down efforts by New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, which seeks to introduce legislation that would outlaw horse-drawn carriages there, a first for an NYC elected Mayor.

“He may be able to act and string lines together, but when it comes to understanding the suffering horses endure in all weather extremes often in suffocating traffic fumes in the carriage trade, sadly Mr Neeson has been a flop,” says ARAN’s John Carmody “The Irish public is commending Mayor de Blasio in his progressive efforts to retire this outdated industry in favor of a New York City that can hold its head up high with streets that do not harbor horse abuse.”

What is wrong with horse drawn carriages? Every year, the list of accidents involving horse-drawn carriages grows, and horses continue to endure pain and suffering because of this outdated practice. The only way to end this cruelty is to ban it permanently and give these horses the freedom that they deserve. Forcing horses to pull oversized loads isn’t romantic—it’s cruel. Horses are forced to toil in all weather extremes, dodge traffic, and pound the pavement all day long. These gentle animals suffer from respiratory ailments because they breathe in exhaust fumes, and they develop debilitating leg problems from walking on hard surfaces. In some cases, horses have even dropped dead from heatstroke after working in scorching summer heat and humidity.
