New Artist Obsession: The Doe Eyed Girls Of Danni Shinya Luo

We discovered Danni Shinya Luo at  Meltdown Comics in Los Angeles. Her book “Break The Ice” beckoned us from the shelves, and we became immediate superfans.. instantaneously plotting how to afford one of her original pieces. Originally from Shanghai, China, Danni moved to California in 1995. She fell in love with art in grade school and after a few years of private study (and an apprenticeship with an old Chinese watercolor master Ding Ha), was accepted into Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.

She majored in illustration and graduated with honor in 2006, beginning her career as a full-time artist. Shinya has assisted artists Gary Baseman and Karl Handael, and exhibited in galleries throughout North America.

Luo’s main subjects are meditations on the beauty of female figures, and the psychological tension that exists between them. She acquires her inspiration from a variety of topics varying from human fears, obsessions, and desires to elements of nature, cosmology, neurolinguistics and high fashion. Her main medium is watercolor with ink, and few other eclectic mediums. Overall, Danni Shinya’s work can be described as fluid and organic, full of feminine romance with hidden conflicts and symbolic elements.

In addition to her gallery work, Danni Shinya also accepts illustration projects from time to time. Her works have appeared in dope magazines like Bust and Initiativa, in books like Eye Candy, and she has done designs for Nickelodeon’s Neopets. She has also created some covers for Marvel on the X-23 comic series. Currently she is working on developing illustrations for Hasbro dolls. Shinya loves to support other talented female artists, and has been a member of Girls Drawin’ Girls since 2006.
