Because you are always looking for a way to ethically fill your wardrobe, we are super psyched to be introducing you to Future:Standard, a spanking new online ethical clothing boutique that we are spending way too many late night hours surfing.
Future:Standard was started by Jessica Althoff as a way for her to find clothing that was gorgeous, green and in line with her values, luckily – she decided to share it with all of us! Everything on the site is made with respect to the earth and the people producing it. The shop carries items made in the US, organics and other sustainable materials, made using sustainable practices and those using socially responsible methods and fair trade practices. It’s easy to say you carry eco-clothes, but this site goes a step further than just carrying organic and sustainable clothing, they ensure everything is made in a socially responsible manner (we are talking factory visits,) with concern for those that are making it.
Anyone who thinks eco-friendly clothing is too expensive is clearly unaware of all the external costs that the alternative has. When you purchase a $6 tee, you aren’t taking into account the external costs like pesticides, unsafe working conditions and unfair wages. Ethical clothing companies actual charge the true cost and that is what the customer is paying for. It makes you feel very good about paying a fair price. To get around this, take care of your clothes, buy high quality, fix things if you can, line dry and of course – wait for a sale!
Why we love it?
It’s a beautifully edited and curated collection of the eco-chicest items we’ve found in an online shop. The site is clean and easily navigated, and there is always a juicy sale section. This is a site any fashionista, earth-loving or not, would be proud to shop on. Plus, the prices are much lower than most of the green clothing sites we shop. Negs? It could use some vegan bags and shoes!
Why the name Future:Standard? Because Jessica is looking forward to the day when clothing does not need to be described as green and ethical, that it is assumed that everything is made this way and that all of this is the standard, so, Future:Standard.
What we love off the site?
This ruffled maxi dress screams summer cocktails. We love the versatility of this cozy dress.
(Eight Chain Necklace, $66 by Lena Bernard @shopfuturestandard.com)
Threads for Thought uses sustainable fabrics to create comfortable, beautiful and socially conscious clothing. Then they donate a portion of their proceeds to charity, which we love. These cozy message tees make us smiley.
(Earth Lover Tank, $28 @shopfuturestandard.com)
No pesticides, herbicides, synthetic fertilizers, harsh bleaches, or gnarly stuff near your ‘gine when you wear PACT panties. Love! PACT partners with environmental and social justice nonprofits to promote and support causes that make a positive difference in the world, from reforestation and marine preservation to youth literacy and sustainable development in Haiti. We think the PACT story is almost as great as the wonderfully cozy underwear.
(Night Lights Thong, $18 @shopfuturestandard.com)

I love the Jaeger bag. I will be graduating this May and am searching for a bag to bring on interviews. My major is women’s studies, and I did my thesis, called “Soulful Living: A Feminist Vegetarian Analysis of Holistic Practices and Businesses”. This bag will be a conversation starter that reflects my values, and my work. I love how the material of the bag is recycling old jackets to make a new piece of work. This created less waste, and is a creative way to use the resources we already have.
My favorite item is Covet’s Belted Trench. Its modern with a touch of vintage styling. I would wear it with everything. My vintage dresses to my jeans and boots. This is a classic piece that you keep and wear to death and then mourn its passing while you figure out what to make of its remains.
I love the Karma Layering Necklace. I’m pregnant with my first, and my wardrobe is in need of some sprucing up. Jewelry is one of the only things guaranteed to still fit and look good no matter what!
I love the boyfriend blazer. I’m a mom of two young girls and its time to get out of the Mommy clothes and inject some style back into my life!
Just like Susan, I was checking out that boyfriend blazer, as I’m also a mom of two who wants to maintain a bit of style … no matter what I’m wearing underneath it. Of course, I was referring to the occasional yoga clothes, although my second option may have you wondering about the comment about “what I’m wearing underneath it.”
My hubby would love for me to sport that trench coat, if you know what I mean ;-) It may be a sale item, but this nearly 35-year-old (my birthday is at the end of this month) can still rock it, proving that it’s worth the original price tag. You can’t go wrong with an updated classic.
Speaking of a classic, I love the thank you cards with the typewriter printed on them. I actually used to type on my mom’s old typewriter, as a child, in preparation for my stint as a reporter and later a newspaper editor. Her and her mother (who I try to write whenever I can) taught me the importance of a personal thank you. To this day, I make sure to send them in a timely fashion.
It’s a tie: I love, love, love the Shane Maxi Dress and may need to snag one for summer parties.
Or, wow, the Encinitas skirt! That is an awesome hemline!
I absolutely love and adore the Jaeger bag! I am a fashion addict, but I tend to shop vintage both for the cost and the lower impact on the environment! I love that this bag is made from recycled leather jackets (which remind me of my father who passed away 10 years ago on the 12th) Another reason is I would love to win this bag is because I am a rev\cent graduate of nursing school, and I just got my RN liscense and this bag would help me look even more polished and professional on job interviews. even if I do not win, I’m so glad that GGA introduced me to this great store! :D
It’s hard to pick just one item, but I love (love!) the Walter Oversized Boyfriend Tunic. What’s better than being an ethical woman wearing this ethical tunic this year at the pool, the beach, to dinner, to brunch… yeah, I’d probably wear it just about everywhere!
If I won the Elias Maxi Dress in red, I would wear it for my first day of becoming a Health Coach, then wear it again the next day to take my Step kids out for Earth Day, and then I would wear it AGAIN the next day for a long walk through Brooklyn to the Farmer’s market. Wearing it over and over again until its worn out is sustainable living lol :D
Oh I’m so absolutely torn between the Boyfriend Blazer and the Tencel Crew Neck Dress. They are both my type of chic and both the perfect pops of style my wardrobe could use right now. If I won either, I know I would wear them out by wearing them constantly.
I’d want the lapel dress! It’s high time I got myself a true Little Black Dress. :)
The Pipin bag is beautiful… but if I had to pick, I would have to choose the Carter Men’s Shirt. Plaid gets me every time, and the cut looks so pretty and feminine.
Oh, and I meant to say, I would probably wear the shirt all the time, over a dress, with shorts, while seeing Arctic Monkeys during my last week living in NYC, or for my going-away picnic in Central Park.
I am new to the eco-friendly clothing scene and wouldn’t mind adding one of these items to my expanding wardrobe. Thanks for such an amazing offer!
I am obsessed with the 8 chain necklace and would rock those amazing dresses every day! They are hot, but the best thing about wearing eco-chic is that every time you get a compliment, its a perfect conversation starter and a chance to inspire others! Eco friendly does not have to mean ‘granola hippie’…you can be stylish chic. Such wonderful pieces… keep up the awesome work!
There was a time to not be seen
In fashion that was deemed as green
Sometimes tacky, always itchy
Green-ish fashion made me bitchy
Now that eco has evolved
To being beautiful, soft and ‘loved’
I cannot wait to donn green gear
It makes me grin from ear to ear
But how to choose which is most desired
All these fashions set my heart afire!
I’d love a dress, a skirt, a top
Once I start, I just can’t stop!
I’ll have to choose a bit of ‘bling’
These shiny things make my heart sing
A wide chain bracelet from Lena B
Is just the piece for little old me!
Thanks for the great site Future Standard! I’m going to be doing A LOT of shopping in the very near future:)
Love the Earth tank, I would wear it to show off my love for our planet in the summer! :0) Love Girlie Girl Army!
i’d love to win the slant dress because my best friend’s wedding is coming up and i am going to be in it! she didn’t give me an assigned dress or color, rather she said, “wear something that reflects who you truly are.” this dress reflects me because of my ethical lifestyle, as well as my love for timeless classics.
I love the Eight Chain necklace. Any outfit can get a instant upgrade with a multi chain necklace. I’m a simply girl but I love great accessories!
I am stuck on which item I like most! I love the Slub Jacket! It’s very me,I’m a farm girl and I love the colors of the forest and nature. I would wear this jacket in all seasons. I would wear it to go shopping in,or really anytime I went out! And when it finally got a bit well-worn after years,I would use it when I went for walks with my dog or during my photography adventures in the forest,it would help me blend in! I love this jacket,it is Very me.
The Encinitas skirt is hottttt. The design is genius! It’s all ruffled and feminine and it would look elegant dressed up with a black blouse and heels…but it would also be fetching worn summer casual with a soft yellow tank (or just a bikini top!)and espadrilles. Sexy either way!
I work in a profession where many (not all) people are obsessed with image. I am looked at oddly because I don’t believe I need a luxury car like everyone else has and keep a small gas friendly one that I love (I can park her anywhere!). I am the one in the office that started encouraging office recycling which I bring home to my town which recycles (the town the office is in doesn’t). And when I recently became vegan, a transition which went from eating meat in October, to vegetarian in November, to no more animal products at all this new year, no one understood at all. For instance, we had lunch at a steakhouse today! Salad and baked potato for me!
I would choose the Belted Trench for a few reasons. 1. to show that you can still be classy and be eco-friendly, 2. because most of my coats are not vegan, 3. because I live in an area that a coat is needed and 4. BECAUSE IT IS BEAUTIFUL ALL ON ITS OWN!!
Thank you for an amazing job!!
I’d want the cute undies!!! And, I really love the tanktop under the chain necklace. I really want to start wearing more eco-friendly clothes. I only have 2 organic cotton shirts. Its high time my beliefs about the environment are reflected in my clothing. I would spread the word to everyone!
I would love to win the “heal” necklace. I don’t own any necklaces and I think this one would be perfect for me. There has been a lot of illness in my family, and I know that now is the time to heal. Bodies, minds, and spirits. My husband suffers from crippling anxiety disorder and is finally taking steps to get our life back. Watch out world, because here we come!! It’s time to heal, the vegan way! :)
I also love the Jaeger bag. How will I wear it? It will become my standard bag and go everywhere with me from now on.
I’ll just walk around with those killer undies and a sandwich board over my torso that reads: Get this hotness & more from GirlieGirlArmy & Future Standard….on a warm day…xoxo
I love the boyfriend blazer! I have been wanting to get a blazer for a long time but haven’t had the funds. It would be a great layering piece and I’d love to wear it to the office with jeans and cute heels.
..The Essential Dress, The Boyfriend Blazer..The Sunny..The Eight Chain Necklace…all of these timeless pieces on Jessica Althoff’s new site (to name but a few) have that elusive element: Quality.
My closet sits open.. pretty empty, waiting for beautiful feminine truly wearable clothes. These are staples. I will wear them to get ahead.
If I do win…Surprise me, please:) I could use them all-how to choose?
Night Lights Thong w/ Heelyz that light up and a string of Tree lights, toss some glitter on- very eco-friendly and festive! In Celebratory style bc PACT helps sustainable development in Haiti and other great causes :)
Thank you Thank you Thank you for showcasing glam for the kind-conscious! With sites like this, there’s no fear of the “earthy-crunchy!” Kudos!!!
My fave item are the two-tone earrings. I would wear them with everything! At night for dinner and live music with a red silk blouse and jeans, during the day for work with a crisp white shirt and jeans, on the weekend for brunch with a colourful tunic and jeans! Hopefully I will always be able to wear jeans ;) They would be the focal point of my outfit (the earrings, not the jeans). I love that they’re made of recycled metal and I would mention that every time I got complimented on them – which would be every time I wore them! It’s so great to see designers making such beautiful things out of recycled materials – it makes it that much more fun for me to wear these pieces, because my eco-conscience is at ease!
I like the slant dress. It would be great for my rehearsal dinner.
I am having my eight grade graduation and that red maxi dress would look perfect. I don’t think I have ever paid more than $40 dollars for a dress. This is my last chance for middle school and I want to be stunning even if it is only for myself.
Congratulations Wendi! You were chosen by Jessica as the winner of this contest. She will ship out your necklace asap! :) Spread the love.
Thank you so much to Jessica at Future Standard and Chloe for hosting the contest! My prize is much appreciated and I will be sure to spread the word about GGA and Future Standard. :)
