Easy ways to save the world and help animals.

An exclusive: EASY PEASY WAYS TO HELP ANIMALS &/ OR SAVE THE WORLD:

Inspired by a note from reader Liza who wrote;

“I recently started fostering a dog a few weeks ago and it’s strange but, I had been wanting to do it for such a long time.  I think it seems like more of a daunting thing to do when you haven’t done it yet.  I thought it would take weeks to save the dog and he was at our house the next day and we were helping save him.  I am a true testament to someone who has fostered a dog and now knows it’s SO easy to do it again and again if the actual responsibilities of having a dog don’t scare you.  So, yeah, basically if
anyone ever writes to you saying they’ve been thinking about it but they’re nervous, etc, refer them to me and I’ll fully convince them to just do it and see how great it is.”

We have compiled this short list (with help from this list).  Though this list is animal focused, you could really use to inspire any of your activism or promoting anything you care about; from children’s charities to your local church group.

  • Sign petitions.  It seems like nothing to you, but as Margaret Mead said “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”   Being an armchair activist is so easy, it’s almost a joke.  And it works!  Write letters to magazines, newspapers, or blogs when you see something that upsets you, make phone calls, send faxes, etc.  It works!  Your comments will be read by thousands, sometimes millions of people – and it does make a difference.
  • Facebook and Myspace are gold for the animals.  I’ve placed countless animals in loving homes by posting on Facebook and MySpace. Use your network for good.  Have your top friends be your favorite animal protection organization, add videos, quotes, and links.  See my page for ideas.
  • Use your skill set to help.  Are you a graphic designer? Volunteer your skills for a local rescue group.  Do you do hair?  Offer to free hair cuts once a month for shelter workers.  Anything you can do can be directly put to use for the animals. My friend Alex owns a tattoo shop.  He donated a gift certificate to a raffle for an animal organization.  Every little bit helps!
  • Attend Parties.  Yep, parties!  Benefits are a great way to meet people you can take home to Mom.  You get to have your girl’s night out, and your ticket price will go towards helping those without a voice.  It’s a win-win!   Girlie Girl always lists tons of Benefits.  If you aren’t in our area, join the non-profit you love the most and sign up for their event alerts.
  • Contact companies that conduct cruel experiments on animals.  www.caringconsumer.com will give you that list.
  • Ask your legislators to support positive animal legislation.  Write them thank yous when they vote for the animals and the environment.
  • Foster a cat or dog, or volunteer at your local shelter.  No one sees them as they labor in tiny cages in shelters.  If you walk them 78and get them out and seen, they are ten times more likely to get adopted.
  • Do not buy an animal. Do adopt and foster. 800 cats and dogs get put down in our country an HOUR.  Trust us, you can find any breed you like on www.petfinder.com (though our mutts are quite gorgeous) without directly supporting hideous breeding practices.  You can also email us to join our adoption network which is nationwide.
  • Leave flyers everywhere.  Whatever your issue; from birds to bees – leave flyers or pamphlets on the train, in cabs, on planes, Doctors waiting rooms, etc.  Anywhere you may have a semi-captive audience who may just be awakened a piece of paper or sticker.
  • Hold a screening. www.tribeofheart.org makes eye opening films on animal issues.  Invite friends over for cocktails n’ cupcakes and watch a film together.  Allow for open dialoguing after.  I’ve seen many a heart be opened after seeing footage of what’s really going on. If you are interested in hosting a larger film screening at your church, synagogue, work place, house, bar, or local knitting group – email beautiful, wonderful, articulate Marisa – she has projector and will travel! marisamiller@verizon.net.
  • Put stickers on your bills.  You can buy just about any kind here.  Be a voice for the animals.  Letters pass many hands before ending up on a desk.  Let your platform be known even via the mailman.
  • Attend a demonstration.  I know it sounds weird, but I promise you – it isn’t!  You actually have fun meeting like minded individuals, and spreading the word on something that your heart is imploring you to do.  They rarely last more than an hour, and make a strong statement to the company you are protesting.
  • Make animal-free food for friends.  Show them just how yummy vegan eating can be.

Whatever your cause, live it from your guts and it will translate to direct action!

Your voice MATTERS!
